Mata Hari, the stage name of Margarete Gertrude Zelle MacLeod (1876-1917) She born in Leeuwarden. She became a dancer in France (1905), after separating from her husband, a Scottsman who served as an officer in the Dutch colonial army. She had many lovers, several in high military & govermental positions (on both sides) and, found guilty of espionage for the Germans, was shot in Paris. The name is a Malay expression for the sun. ca. 1905-1917
