Paper Users

From Read or Die Wiki

(Redirected from Paper user)
The Paper Sisters as featured in the Read or Dream manga are only few of the Paper Users existent in the ROD universe.
A papermaster (also paper master, paper-master, Papermaster, and in Japanese 紙使い|kamitsukai) is one who has telekinetic control over paper.

Paper users vary in strength and ability, given the nature of paper. Paper users can:

  • form sharp blades with the edge of the paper
  • form shields, some powerful enough to defend from bullets and bombs
  • form weapons such as swords, staves and arrows
  • form and control large objects such as planes, boats and puppets (given sufficient amounts of paper)
  • mentally throw paper at an opponent
  • trace people with paper, sometimes over great distances
  • 'chain' pages to form strong whips and ropes
  • forge documents
  • create clothing

Note that not all paper users can do the above, and with varying strength and success. For example, Anita King requires a thick book to block bullets, while Yomiko Readman is capable of the same feat with a single sheet of paper.

Paper users also have a number of weaknesses that only the strongest users can overcome:

  • fire: paper still remains flammable
  • water: if paper is too wet, it cannot be used
  • sound: some sound frequencies are known to nullify paper abilities

Paper manipulation needs a strong will to use. If a paper user has any doubt in his abilities, he will be unable to accomplish more advanced feats. If a paper user is knocked unconscious, the paper under his control is released and can be moved by anyone.

In the Read or Die manga, paper users can use only special paper which is created by British Library scientist Jiggy Stardust. In the Read or Die OVA as well as the R.O.D the TV anime series the paper users can use any ordinary paper, including magazines and paper money (which is not entirely made of paper).

The ability is genetic. Paper users can also nullify each other's abilities; a stronger paper user can turn his opponent's paper into his/her own weapon.

Paper users in the series include:
